Materials to build the Shield

Students at Morningside STEM Elementary took up “The Challenge” to test their knowledge and creativity in the STEM field. Their goal was to build a shield which could protect an egg from the heat of a blow torch for five minutes, simulating conditions a craft would experience re-entering our atmosphere from space.

The materials used to protect the “egg-stronaut” could not be more than 1/4″ thick. Materials to make their shields were provided, with each material assigned a different value. Students couldn’t “spend” more than 100 credits on their shield.

Students worked as a group to formulate their plan, create their shield, and finally put it to the test. The kids had a great time learning about thermodynamics, and several shields beat the challenge!
