A Sioux City Career Academy intern receives on the job HVAC training with Kalins Indoor Comfort

SFor the first time since Sioux City’s Career Academy started, two students are working with H-VAC professionals in Siouxland.

Kalins Indoor Comfort Heating has brought on Jesse Mills and Josef Yousefpour, two seniors this semester learning the ins and outs of contracting with H-VAC. The students get hands-on experience at job sites to see if they’re up for the task as a career path.

“Definitely a lot better than going to class I would say. It’s a real-life experience so a lot of places won’t hire you unless you have experience. Even though it’s just an internship it’s really nice going out and basically doing a full-time job,” West High senior, Josef Yousefpour said.

“I think this is what I want to do. I get to learn, and I get to learn a lot more than I would in a classroom just sitting down,” Jesse Mills, also a senior at West High said.

One of the Career Academy’s goals is to fuel the local workforce, and Kalins makes sure the interns get the real experience of a technician.

Kalins has had its own internship for years, but partnering with the Career Academy reaches new students.

“We will dispatch them to the call with their partner technician and they do show up in their Kalins uniform. What’s great about the program is that every day is different for the interns. No two calls are the same, they will get plenty of exposure with all call types that we do have,” Alyssa Reinert, Customer Service Supervisor, at Kalins Indoor Comfort said.

Kalin plans to offer the students full-time positions after graduation in May.

The Career Academy has over 80 students in internships throughout the Siouxland area. Students wanting to start an internship with Kalins can reach out to any of their 3 locations for more information.
