Sioux City, Iowa — In accordance with Iowa Code section 279.6, the Board of Directors of the Sioux City Community School District in the Counties of Woodbury and Plymouth, State of Iowa publishes this notice of intent to fill the current vacancy on The Sioux City Community School District’s Board of Directors by appointment.

Qualified individuals interested in being considered for this appointment must submit a letter of interest to Seaniece Heilman, Board Secretary, at 627 4th Street, Sioux City, Iowa 51101 including their name, address, qualifications (education/background) and reason for interest, no later than August 19, 2022.

Eligible electors of The Sioux City Community School District also have the right to file a petition requiring that the vacancy be filled by a special election conducted pursuant to Iowa Code section 279.7.  For a petition to be valid it must be filed with the Board Secretary at the address noted above within 14 days after this publication and must be signed by a number of eligible electors that is at least 30% of the number of voters at the last preceding regular school election.

Qualified Individuals

A candidate for a school board must be an “eligible” elector in the school district at the time of the election or appointment. An “eligible elector” means a person who possesses all of the qualifications necessary to entitle the person to be registered to vote, including:

  1. The individual must be a) a citizen of the United States, b) a resident of Iowa, and c) at least 18 years old; and
  2. The individual may not a) be a convicted felon whose voting rights have not been restored, b) be currently judged incompetent to vote by a court, or c) claim the right to vote in any other place.
