Sioux City, Iowa – Muriel Rickard is unlike any other individual you are likely to meet.
The Siouxlander has over a century of stories, many of those from her time as a teacher and an administrator in the Sioux City Community School District. On September 7, the former educator will turn 107 years young – an amazing milestone for a woman well ahead of her time.
Born in 1915, Muriel earned her two-year degree from Buena Vista University at a time when women did not commonly pursue advanced degrees. After traveling the world with the Red Cross, Muriel came to Sioux City in 1948 and began her career in education.
During her time as a teacher at Bryant, Bancroft, Floyd, and Lincoln elementary schools in Sioux City, Muriel earned her four-year degree along with her master’s degree. When she left Sioux City in 1971 to take a position in Phoenix, Arizona, she was serving as an administrator in the District.
Never one to slow down, Muriel’s suitcase was always half-packed as she was ready to embark on a new adventure. To this day, Muriel’s daughter, Mari, says her mom is still spunky and talks fondly about her former students. Many of them still send Muriel cards on her birthday, something that brings her much delight.
Four years ago – at age 102, Muriel broke her hip. In true Muriel fashion, she didn’t let the setback stop her. Muriel persevered, surprising even her doctors.
As she looks forward to her September birthday, Muriel continues to live life on her terms, serving as a role model for everyone who has had the joy of knowing her.
