A friendly competition is heating up at one Sioux City school.
At the beginning of the school year, students at Liberty Elementary School are assigned to one of several houses at the school.
Each month, the school competes in a variety of games with their housemates and classmates. for the opportunity to be named the house champion.
School leaders say this is to build a sense of pride and encourage mentorship, inclusion, and healthy competition.
“The houses are intended to help kids have a place where they belong where they feel they are part of a family and so each house is made up of students kindergarten through 5th,” said Principal Stacie Henderson.
Students got to play fun games but also learned important life lessons.
“I learned we need to cheer on in teams and be respectful and be grateful,” said Deybi Cabreare, who’s part of team Kaulike.
“To be grateful for other people even though you don’t win,” said Amiyah Wyatt, who’s part of team Fursad.
Some school staff did get involved and a mascot race was held for the students.
