What to Expect on Registration Day
Once you complete online pre-registration, the District will contact you with next steps for registration day. You will receive a registration time from your child’s school. Expect the registration process to take 30-45 minutes.
#1 Families Check-in at the Main Entrance
A much-anticipated day for your family has arrived. The staff in the Sioux City Community School District will welcome you from the moment you step through our school doors. We are committed to helping you navigate this major milestone.
#2 Parents/Guardians Complete Online Verification
During online verification families provide contact information, request busing transportation, fill out District forms, and pay curriculum resource fees for use of District textbooks, electronic devices, and other items.
#3 Parents/Guardians Complete a Home Language and Ethnicity Survey
These surveys help the District determine if your child needs English Language (EL) support. Every building in SCCSD has English as a Second Language (ESL) programming.
The ESL program model uses techniques, methodology, and a special curriculum designed to teach EL students English language skills, which may include listening, speaking, reading, writing, study skills, content vocabulary, and cultural orientation.
#4 Students Complete ESL Testing (if applicable)
As stated above, if the District determines your child needs EL support, they will receive an additional test to help the District best prepare them for the start of the school year.
#5 Parents/Guardians Meet with the School Nurse
During registration, the nurse at your child’s school will collect your child’s immunization records, vision card/certificate, dental health screening/certificate, and blood lead screening.
#6 Students Complete a Kindergarten Readiness Screening
During this screening, your child will be assessed for basic kindergarten readiness skills. Our schools may assess self-care skills (handwashing, potty training, putting on shoes, etc.), cognitive skills (identifying colors, shapes, letters, and sounds), gross motor skills (running, skipping, walking backward, etc.), and fine motor skills (cutting with scissors, holding a pencil, completing a puzzle, etc.).
#7 Our Staff Observe while Students Complete an Activity
During this activity, our staff assesses your child’s social and emotional skills while interacting with other children and adults.
