The Board delegates authority for the selection of library materials to the qualified teacher librarians employed by the District. While the final selection and recommendation for purchase rests with the teacher librarians,

suggestions will be welcomed from each building’s teachers, students, and administrators.

Library materials are print and non-print items including literary works, narratives, and other texts or artifacts that are selected for research, free choice reading, or recreation, but not generally for direct or required instruction.

Teacher librarians shall be responsible for the selection, maintenance and removal of library materials. The selection process shall be guided by the philosophy and procedures set forth in national, state, and district documents, including the Library Bill of Rights (ALA), Freedom to Read Statement, and interpretive statements adopted thereto.

The District will publish on the District’s website a comprehensive list of all books available to students in school libraries operated by the District.

Materials donated to a school library program must meet the criteria established herein and comply with Board Policy 805 - Gifts to the District.
