This 2-year regional pathway generally prepares individuals in the knowledge, techniques and procedures for promoting health, providing care for sick, disabled, infirmed, or other individuals or groups. Includes instruction in the administration of medication and treatments, assisting a physician during treatments and examinations, referring patients to physicians and other health care specialists and planning education for health maintenance.

Key Competencies

• Discover the fundamentals of patient care in the health care environment.

• Focus on meeting human needs, safety measures, infection control, and physical care.

• Practice tasks, assessments, and observations of patients in the health care environment.

• Develop technical skills specific to the complex needs of patients.

• Complete 30 hours of clinical work outside normal class time.

• Understand the principles of medical law, medical ethics, and bioethics, including the function of law and ethical issues as it applies to the medical environment.

• Discover a variety of medical and surgical conditions, which include etiology, symptoms, diagnostic procedures, and treatment.

• Develop a framework of knowledge to recognize the basic concepts and principles of pharmacology.

• Explore major drug classifications and their actions, indications for use, adverse effects, interactions, and contraindications for use.

• Understand routes of medication administration, dosage calculation, and patient education related to medications.

• Understand the relationship between proper nutrition and good health, including digestion, absorption, and metabolism of carbohydrates, lipids, and proteins.

• Develop a knowledge of vitamins, minerals, physical activity, maintenance of healthy body weight, nutritional needs throughout the entire life cycle, and evaluation of nutritional claims.

• Explore the perception of health and illness among consumers and health care providers, including cultural assessment, health practices of different cultures, conflicts in health care, and strategies to request and provide culturally sensitive care.
