Director of Assessment

John

The Purpose of Assessment:
-to determine whether essential concepts and skills at each grade level and subject area are being mastered by all students.
-to help guide teachers' daily instruction, evaluate our instructional strategies, curriculums and materials, and determine areas that need professional development and/or improvement.
The following assessments are used each year by the district to help measure the academic growth of students in our schools. The Assessment Department is directly involved with the administration of the following tests and the analysis of the results.
- Iowa Test of Basic Skills (Grades 3 - 8)
- Iowa Test of Educational Development (Grades 9 - 11)

Three levels of achievement
are shown; low, intermediate and high.
Proficiency is defined as the percent of students scoring at or
above the 41st percentile as measured by the Iowa Test of Basic
Skills (ITBS) or the Iowa Test of Educational Development (ITED).
Low achievement is defined as the percent of students
scoring between the 1st and 40th percentile on the ITBS or the
ITED. The intermediate achievement level contains students
between the 41st and 89th percentile, and high achievement
is 90th percentile and above. The percent proficient is the
intermediate and high combined. The ITBS is given annually to
students in grades 3-8. The ITED is administered to students in
grades 9-11. Testing in grades 9 and 10 is not
required.
Based on data from one year ago, the Sioux City Community School District hasbeen classified as a District in Need of Assistance. Please know that student achievement will remain our highest priority, and work has begun on a strategic plan to address this issue.
