Mentor Program Started

Every Classroom Counts is a new initiative of the United Way of Siouxland in collaboration with Big Brothers Big Sisters and the Sioux City Community School District. It is a school-based mentor and volunteer program aimed at eliminating the achievement gap among Siouxland youth, especially in the area of Reading. Mentors and volunteers are placed into Sioux City elementary classrooms to assist students with school work, projects, and other educational activities.

Mentors are matched one-on-one with a child, and visit that same child once a week at school. The mentor can be a tutor, help with projects, or simply socialize with the child. The purpose of a mentor is to provide the student a source of stability and help, which leads to more confidence within the child to succeed.

Volunteers are placed in a classroom to assist with groups of students. This may include helping with homework, reading out loud, or supervising a large group so the teacher can offer more focused attention to students who may need some extra help.

If you are interested in becoming a volunteer or mentor, or if you are interested in enrolling your child into the program, please contact Matt Gaul:
